A free experimental school of the future in Uganda
Kyaffe is designed as a free experimental School and hopes to become a blueprint for future schools. While recent infrastructural developments across Africa have made school facilities more accessible, millions of children in Sub-Saharan Africa have limited access to actual education since school fees are unaffordable for the families.
The school building was purchased in order for field workers’ children of a coffee-growing collective to have access to education. I co-founded the school together with the collective’s representatives in order for it to become an engine for transformation not only for the children but also the community.
My activities center around Kyaffe becoming sustainable and attracting tech donations and partnerships. So far we have converted its 2 hectares of land into a subsistence farm that ensures school meals and sells surplus products; we have also created a small court to serve as a community gathering space.
Based on community feedback we are currently iterating solutions to consider income-generating facilities for other community members; setting up an artisan collective is the idea we are experimenting with.
